Z Operation Semut I Z Operation Semut I

"Operation Semut I"

by Bob Long

Parachuting behind Japanese lines, operatives of Semut I “Z” Special Unit, relate the sheer hell of soldiering in jungle-covered Borneo with native head hunters while traversing precipitous mountain terrain, raging river torrents, and enduring ever rampant illness and food shortage.
At the height of success, Semut I operatives and local guerrilla forces controlled an area of 16,000 square miles containing nearly 125,000 people.
Armed originally with blow-pipes, poisoned darts and parangs and led by lone “Z” operatives, the native guerrillas were later upgraded to rifles and sub-machine guns, abruptly launching them into the use of 20th century weaponry. Under “Z” Special leaders, revenge was gained against the enemy in blood thirsty encounters, thereby atoning to some degree for the vicious atrocities perpetrated against the Borneo population during the three and a half years occupation of this island.

Shark Shark Hugh Edwards has been involved with sharks for more than 40 years; as a diver, journalist, photographer and film-maker. In this book, he examines the reversal of human attitudes towards sharks since the 1950s and 60s when the only good shark was considered to be a dead one. With depictions of terrifying shark attacks mixed with a wealth of information on the shark as a species, you will see sharks in their most natural habitat, and the resulting human casualties at the hands of these mesmerising creatures. Fishtraps and Floods Apples and Spuds Fishtraps and Floods Apples and Spuds Albany is an exquisite coastal city steeped in tradition and history. It is home to more than 30,000 people and one of those residents, Richard Piggott, brings to his readers a beautifully compiled account of Lower Kalgan, one of the states earliest-settled rural districts.

Each chapter delves into vastly different aspects to the areas formation, from the first landowners, the tearooms, the struggle for local schools, rumours of local ghosts and the rise into the 1960s and onwards. Richard Piggott lets us take a sneak peak into family diaries, personal letters and local records, all of which exemplify a thoroughly authentic and personal read.

"This book then attempts to fill a void; to record something of Lower Kalgan’s past before what is currently known is lost.” Richard Piggott

The Buccaneer's Bell The Buccaneer's Bell William Dampier and Louis de Freycinet both played important roles in exploring the Western Australian coast. Both captains found themselves wrecked on desolate islands in the far South Atlantic while homeward bound. In 2001 seven men set out on a journey to find the final resting places of their ships the 'Uranie' and 'Roebuck'. In this fascinating account of these captains' lives, Hugh Edwards skilfully places the historical context against the excitement of the successful search for the lost ships. A triumph of modern adventure! BASSENDEAN $ 39.95 AUD storefront
