| Whilst this book was written to honour the war time experiences of Ray and Harold Gaby, it does much more than that. Through the eyes of these two country larrikins, Enid Russell has skilfully painted a broader canvas of Aussies fighting in North Africa, prisoner of war camps, and life in war time Kalgoorlie. 'With Duty Nobly Done' is the very human story of two Kalgoorlie brothers, nephews of a WWI Victoria Cross winner, who went to the Second World War with the 2/28th Battalion. Told via letters and interviews, Harold and Ray Gaby's war experiences at Tobruk and El Alamein and as prisoners of war in Italy, Germany and Poland, have been skillfully linked with explanatory background narrative by their niece, Enid Russell. The 2/28th Battalion had a proud record of service in North Africa and Ms Russell's book does justice to that record and her uncles' service for their country. |
